Trust Beenie Man to turn a national argument into a tune. The dancehall veteran has been previewing a new song called ‘Weh Di Money De’, and the buzz has been so strong that the phrase shot to No. 1 on Jamaica’s Google trending searches, according to figures from World Music Views reported by DancehallMag.
Where the song comes from
The track grows straight out of the row over Hurricane Melissa recovery money. Ahead of the storm’s first anniversary, Beenie Man told ITV News reporter Cree-Summer Haughton that he doubted relief funds were reaching the people who needed them most. Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness answered at the reopening of Black River Hospital in St Elizabeth, pointing to $300 million spent rebuilding the facility and joking that the Minister of Health had “neglected to invite Beenie Man.”
The back-and-forth lit up social media with memes and split opinions, and Beenie Man took it to the studio. He has said he is only asking for transparency, adding: “Reggae and dancehall have always given a voice to the people, especially those who feel unheard.”
Who is behind it
‘Weh Di Money De’ was co-written by Beenie Man and his wife Camille Lee, and comes through their own Beenie Man Music label. No producer has been named yet.
One note of caution: a Google trending spot captures a surge at a single moment, not overall search volume. Whether the song becomes a full-blown hit is still to be seen – but in classic dancehall style, the people are already talking. RTMRADIO.NET will be keeping this one on the radar.
