One of hip-hop’s heavyweights is heading back behind the desk. Fat Joe has a brand-new NPR Music Tiny Desk performance premiering on Thursday 5 November, with the news announced on social media by NFR Podcast on Wednesday.
Round two at the Tiny Desk
This is Joe’s second time in the series. His first, a Tiny Desk (Home) edition, premiered in June 2021, when NPR was filming remotely during the pandemic. He set up at his UP NYC sneaker store with a live band and DJ Ted Smooth, while Angelica Vila handled several vocal parts, including sections first sung by Ashanti. That set ran through ‘What’s Luv?’ and ‘Lean Back’ before closing with ‘All the Way Up’, his 2016 smash with Remy Ma.
The setlist and any guests for the new performance have not been revealed, so expect a few surprises.
Fresh off ‘Organized Rhyme’
The timing lines up nicely with Joe’s latest album, Organized Rhyme, a 12-track project made with Cool & Dre that dropped in August. Jadakiss shows up on ‘The Aroma’, Pusha T on ‘Set of Keys’ and Remy Ma on ‘Dead or Alive’. In an interview with the Bronx Times, Joe framed the record as one for listeners who value the hip-hop culture he grew up in, rather than one chasing trends.
The performance will be available on NPR Music’s YouTube channel and the Tiny Desk platform. Classic Fat Joe records in a cosy office setting? RTMRADIO.NET is tuned in.
