Whitney Houston is getting a high-profile documentary. Whitney. ‘Can I Be Me,’ directed by Nick Broomfield and Rudi Dolezal, will track Houston’s career and sudden death at age 48 (she died from accidental drowning in 2012). According to Tribeca’s description, the Showtime production will feature rarely seen footage to tell the story of the six-time Grammy winner’s life. Last May, Broomfield detailed some of his plans for the documentary, and revealed that he had little interest in speaking with Houston’s ex-husband Bobby Brown. “Brown and Whitney were in a kind of dance,” Broomfield told Indiewire. “They were completely destructive because they were in a weird competition. I’ve never heard Bobby Brown even vaguely talk eloquently about that. I also don’t want to spend that kind of money on him.” At that time, the director said he’d secured the rights to use nine of Houston’s most famous songs in the documentary, but that her estate had discouraged subjects from speaking with him. Whitney. ‘Can I Be Me’ will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival as part of the Spotlight Documentary Lineup, and will be available on Showtime later this year. –
